It seems like there’s always a celebration just around the corner. Between holidays, promotions, graduations, weddings, and birthdays, you’re never far from a party. Cannabis has been a party staple since before the dawn of the modern era (at least), so it’s safe to say cannabis and celebration go well together.
Yet, not every strain makes for an ideal party guest. Many are too anxious, or too drowsy to feel sociable, others too potent to let you keep up with conversation. It’s not just a matter of indica vs sativa, the right strain to get you vibing socially can come from any part of the spectrum. Below, you’ll find a variety of selections to help put you in the party mood.

Marijuana Strains for Socializing
If you’re rolling one on your way to a celebration, here are a few strains that play well with others:
Blue Dream is a dependable go-to for a happy, uplifting social high. A quality crop of it should impart a light, floaty feeling that helps you move through the party scene like a care-free cloud. It’s not overly introspective or anxiety inducing, tends to make people chatty, and maybe a little giggly with lowered social anxiety. Blue Dream lends itself well to almost any social gathering that has some physical activity thrown in, from a BBQ to a night at the club. Snooty stoners might call it “basic” because they have heard their favorite rapper name drop it a hundred times, but there’s a reason it’s shouted-out so often in party anthems.
This is for the high-energy type of gathering, like an all-day adult kickball tournament or group obstacle course. Alternatively, Golden Goat has been known to kick weddings into high gear. It’s great for the dance floor and the rush of celebration, but you may want to be cautious in a club setting, you wouldn’t want to feel confined while experiencing a good burst of energy from Golden Goat. However, for boat regattas, pool days, family reunion games, or anything else that makes you move around in the sunshine, you’ll be good as gold.
Bruce Banner #3
Bruce Banner #3 is what I like to bring to a gathering when someone claims they haven’t experienced true knockout potency. The spicy terpene profile packs a power punch, leaving you thoroughly stony, yet energized. Like its namesake, Banner tends to start strong, then change and chill a bit after the initial hulk-out, leaving newcomers a little surprised, but happy. You may not be the best conversationalist after consuming it, but you probably won’t care either. I like Banner for parties that involve games or group activities. If you’re playing a berserker Warrior at your latest D&D night, consider bringing out the Bruce.
Being indica-leaning, I find Bordello to be very chill, but it’s rarely sleepy. I’d mark this strain closer to a true hybrid that happens to come with its own accompanying smooth-jazz soundtrack. It’s a good mellow strain, and the sweet notes of berry and mild skunk pair well with desserts and comfortable conversation. Bordello is great for later in the party, when the chaos has died down and interpersonal vibes are rich. It’s a strain for connecting, and goes well with sitting on the back deck around a cozy fire with friends, or the moment the coffee comes out at a dinner party. Even the name sounds a touch more sophisticated, while still evoking thoughts of naughty fun.
Cherry Lime Haze
Cherry strains tend to be happy, and Hazes energetic, meaning Cherry Lime Haze provides an uplifting, friendly high that can be easily navigated by newcomers and seasoned consumers alike, but is not necessarily focused. I’d save this one for a bigger party with lots of people, where you don’t expect to hold court over any one topic for too long. I reach for this strain for pool parties and outdoor festival gatherings. Cherry Lime Haze tends to creep a bit too, so it can be good for the start of a party as things are still getting going. It’s a good one to spark just after you set up the last decorations, and will certainly remind you to put out the snacks. I find it a worthy appetite stimulant about halfway through the high, so it also makes for a good option at big dinner celebrations.
A good batch of Headband is a unique thing. Often imitated, never replicated, I find headband can put you in that perfect zone of energized, socially fluid and focused, with a mild body buzz to back it up. For some, the namesake feeling of a tight headrush can be uncomfortable if you’re not accustomed to it, but those who don’t mind the squeeze (or even enjoy it), find Headband hits that special sweet spot.
East Coast Alien
If the headband is a bit much, East Coast Alien is not too far off, and offers a really nice mix of Diesel energy with just enough indica to feel warm and soft. I have cleaned my entire apartment on pure Diesel strains, but here the cross with Alien Technology takes away the almost buzzy edge other Diesels can have. East Coast Alien is a good balanced strain to bring to any party setting: not too much in any direction and just enough to get you where you want to be. With a smooth onset, It’s also good option for those that are a newer to cannabis, so if you’re planning on introducing some friends to the plant, this or Blue Dream tend to be good starter strains (though remember a little may go a long way).
As always, the right strain for the occasion is the one that’s right for you. The list above can act as a great starting point for exploration. Perhaps you find one of these selections is close to what you’re looking for, but not quite it. Look for strains with similar genetics and effects to find the sweet spot. A well-informed budtender can help point you in the right direction, and some research using PotGuide’s strain directory to find the perfect party strain as well.
